Image
It’s official –South Africa’s biggest, best and most FOMO-inducing party returns to the calendar when the HSBC Cape Town Sevens kicks off on Friday, 9 December 2022, after a two-year COVID-induced shutdown. Ticket sales company Ticketmaster has announced it has completed a deal to oversee sales for the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series tournament in Cape Town. The men’s and women’s tournaments are due to be held in the South African city between December 9 and 11, and are scheduled to act as the third round of the 2023 season. The Wrap: Let’s get the Wallabies and All Blacks on the plane before they run out of players

Rugby tours to the northern hemisphere are tough enough at the best of times. Tougher still when you’re 11 months out from a World Cup and starting to feel the pressure that comes with not having bedded down the players and combinations that are going to get the job done in France. Coach Power Rankings: Cheik at 5, Eddie at 7, Dave below both. Plus a surprise No.1 ahead of autumn series

As the tours of the north begin and the World Cup looms a year hence, what is the balance of power amongst Test rugby coaches? Ahead of a huge five weeks of games, The Roar ranks the top 10 coaches, including the assistants 10. Wayne Pivac (Wales head coach) The Welsh rugby clubs are being stung like wasps in Worcestershire sauce. But the fact remains that you can put 23 excellent players on the pitch for the national side. When you have the ability to leave Alun Wyn Jones out and still field 1000 caps with ten British & Irish Lions, you are in every Test with a chance. Pivac had an auspicious 2021 and won the Six Nations. In 2022 his side lost to Italy, and struggled to score. Their South African tour offered some hope, with Tommy Reffell and the boys going toe to toe until their legs gave out to a chop-and-change Springbok squad. He has not captured the hearts of the Welsh rugby firmament. He seems like man in a rented house with a lamp not of his own choosing and drapes fr...

Is this the Wallabies’ big chance to climb the rankings?

Image
From what I have read on these pages most people seem to believe the World Rugby rankings system is a waste of time. Perhaps you gents would all like to top up your pints and sit back down and argue about which team is number one based on your take on recent results. For me, it’s more a case of results into a formula and whack-o the did, we’ve got a #1. Looking at how the rankings sit currently; it is a fairly good indication of where each team is at the moment. It’s a little more involved than two points for a win and a bonus point for tries scored though. The nerd that thought it up put a fair bit of effort into taking different match-ups and results into consideration to come up with a formula to reflect an outcome for both teams, that to me seems masterfully equitable. The two playing teams gain or lose the same amount of points depending on the winner. Home ground advantage is taken into consideration. Ranking points apart are taken into consideration. Big wins are worth mor...

Rugby tours to the northern hemisphere are tough enough at the best of times. Tougher still when you’re 11 months out from a World Cup and starting to feel the pressure that comes with not having bedded down the players and combinations that are going to get the job done in France. Dave Rennie’s Wallabies have been world beaters this year in having a stream of players drop by the wayside, but a swathe of late changes announced by All Blacks’ coach Ian Foster means that Australia isn’t alone in heading north with a compromised squad. Both Rennie and Foster have come under fire for their poor winning records, but unless something incredibly calamitous happens over the next 4-5 weeks, no amount of shouting from the bleachers changes the fact that these tours are steps along the journey, as opposed to being the defining moment of their respective tenures. For Rennie in particular, it’s a fascinating situation. A 2-3 result will see his Test career win ratio slip well south of 40 percen...
