Michael Hooper reviews All Blacks win over Wallabies

Image
For those who live in Sydney, the weekend’s athletic events were difficult. Australia was defeated in a Bledisloe Cup Test, while the Sydney Swans, who were favoured to win the AFL Grand Final at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, lost by a huge margin. The Sydney Swans faced the Brisbane Lions on the hallowed grounds of the MCG some two hours before to the Wallabies vs All Blacks match of the previous Saturday. However, the Lions gained a commanding lead halfway through the game, and the premiership was all but settled. Brisbane ended up smashing home by a massive 120-60 score. That left the fervent supporters wondering where it had all gone wrong as they watched their side battle for gold on the Sydney Cricket Ground’s big screen. A rugby match was in progress across the ditch when the AFL’s big dance siren went off. At Wellington’s Sky Stadium, the Wallabies took the lead through Fraser McReight, and although the first forty minutes were close, the second half saw all play go to the ...

48-7 South Africa Argentina wins the Rugby Championship for the first time since 2019.

Aphelele Fassi scored two of the Springboks’ four first-half tries before helping out Cheslin Kolbe. Pieter-Steph du Toit, who was named player of the match, also scored the first of his two tries, and fly-half Tomas Albornoz scored for Argentina. The game’s pivotal moment occurred in the second half when Pablo Matera, a Pumas substitute, received a yellow card that was later upgraded to a 20-minute red for making contact with his head while attempting to clear Vincent Koch. Malcolm Marx took advantage of a blatant knock-on from full-back Santiago Carreras, who joined Matera in the sin bin. Du Toit scored once more, and the game’s last touchdown came from centre Jesse Kriel, who converted a dinked kick by Handre Pollard. With their victory, the Springboks also exacted revenge for their one-point loss in Argentina previous Saturday, which had kept them from winning the title a week early. It had been an hour and a half of travel. “The way we stood up after last week says a lot about...

In the Bledisloe Cup in Wellington, the All Blacks overcome the Wallabies 33–13 after falling behind

Image
After a strong start, the Wallabies lost 33–13 to the All Blacks in Wellington, capping a poor Rugby Championship campaign. In new coach Joe Schmidt’s debut tournament as head coach, the Wallabies finished bottom of the ladder having only won one game. Keeping possession of the ball, the Wallabies launched deep attacks that placed the All Blacks on the defensive. But despite that strong start, the Wallabies were beset by old habits; they seemed unsteady in one-on-one defence and ill-disciplined in defence when the game was about to run away from them. The hard-earned confidence from the All Blacks’ second-half performance in Sydney quickly vanished as they played with sheer brutality and precision, inspired by their slick fullback Will Jordan. Harry Wilson, the captain of the Wallabies, stated, “That’s not the result we wanted.” “Our first forty was excellent, in my opinion. We turned up, got off to a quick start, but in the second half, we had trouble keeping possession.” After a...
