Blitzboks pull off Dubai Sevens rugby double
South Africa accomplished a Dubai twofold in an unbeaten beginning to the rugby sevens world series subsequent to edging Australia 10-7 in the last on Saturday.
The South Africans have won four competitions in succession – – the two in September that established the abbreviated 2021 series, and the two Dubai Sevens opening the 2022 series in the course of the most recent two ends of the week, compensating for the dropped South Africa Sevens.
They broadened their group record match-series of wins to 24 subsequent to being pushed to the edge in the elimination rounds and last.
JC Pretorius scored the securing attempts in both. In the elimination round against France, at 12-12 with seconds to go, Pretorius took a calculated run at the French and got out of the tackle of Ethan Dumortier and jumped away to the line. South Africa won 19-12 with the transformation.
Dubai Sevens II Final Video
In a triumph of perseverance and determination, a depleted and exhausted Blitzboks team found just enough in the tank to win their second consecutive Dubai Sevens title in two weeks, beating Australia 10-7 in a tense final.
The Blitzboks, who won last week’s final by a canter against the USA, had their work cut out for them even more in week two.
Starting with only 11 of their 14 players available, it meant less substitutions and more workload for every player and while their class shone through, it was clear by the end they were running on empty.
But that is what made the victory all the more impressive. While they cantered through their pool games and coasted past Kenya into the semifinals, they were made to work hard by a France team very much in control.
Considering Australia came into the final on the back of a 40-0 win over Argentina, it was always going to be a tough ask.
