Farmlands Cup : Highlanders to host Crusaders in Weston for pre-season match
Weston will have the Super Rugby pre-season match between the Highlanders and Crusaders on February 4. The little North Otago town, found 5km inland from Oamaru, is the most recent setting for the yearly Farmlands Cup pre-season apparatus.
Waimumu, Darfield, Southbridge, Wanaka, and most as of late Temuka, have facilitated Farmlands Cup games, which were presented in 2016, empowering the groups to associate with rustic networks in the South Island.
The following year’s match will be played at the Valley Rugby Club on a Friday evening, three weeks before Super Rugby Pacific starts off.
Highlanders v Crusaders – Farmlands Cup 2022
“The Farmlands Cup is always a great celebration of Super Rugby online in the regions.
“While there’s plenty of mutual respect between the two sides, the rivalry between the Crusaders and our southern neighbours is strong and I’m sure both teams will look to put on a show for the community in North Otago to open the 2022 season.”
All Blacks representatives won’t re-join their Super Rugby teams until mid-February, and won’t be available for the match.
The Highlanders confirmed on Tuesday that New Zealand’s nationwide move into its red light Covid setting has resulted in the axing of its February 11 clash against Moana Pasifika in Queenstown.
Across the Tasman Sea in Australia, the Western Force have also been forced to pull the pin on Sunday’s pre-season bout with the Fijian Drua in Ballina, New South Wales, due to updated border restrictions for Western Australia.
The announcements come a day after the Crusaders announced its pre-season clash against the Hurricanes would be relocated from Blenheim to Christchurch and would be played behind closed doors.
The Highlanders added that its other pre-season match – the side’s annual Farmlands Cup outing against the Crusaders, which is scheduled to take place in Oamaru next Friday – will also now be played behind closed doors.
The Dunedin-based franchise’s decision to pull the plug on the Moana Pasifika match is a double blow for Queenstown as it comes after last year’s Super Rugby Trans-Tasman fixture between the Highlanders and Melbourne Rebels was moved to Sydney amid a travel pause between New Zealand and Victoria.
