Fiji will play Springbok Sevens in the Cup quarterfinals

The Springbok Sevens will take on Fiji in the Cup quarterfinals of the HSBC LA Sevens later on Sunday. After an exciting first day of sevens play at Dignity Health Stadium in Los Angeles.

Numerous games had to be postponed due to the extreme weather, including the Blitzboks’ second game of the day versus Uruguay, which had to be rescheduled twice due to lightning in the vicinity.

In addition, the Blitzboks dropped two of their pool matches due to a sluggish performance.

The day began well with a valiant victory over Canada (12-5) in the opening match, but the rest of the day was not as happy with defeats to Uruguay and Ireland.

South Africa, Canada, and Uruguay had the same number of log points at the completion of play due to other results in the pool, but the Blitzboks advanced due to their greater points differential.

There was not much to rejoice for Springbok Sevens assistant coach Philip Snyman. He claimed that although it was a letdown, they will have another chance to redeem themselves on Day Two.

Conditions aside, we played poorly. In our game against Canada, we played reasonably well, but against Uruguay, we struggled mightily in the breakdown and ball protection. We lost control of the ball unnecessarily because we were too slow to the breakdown.

However, their performance versus Ireland fell short of expectations. We had multiple opportunities to put Ireland under strain and score points, but we failed to take advantage of them.

At other times, we just needed to play the overlap but didn’t because we kicked the ball away with players in advantageous situations. In the semifinal encounter against Fiji, he remarked, they will need to do better.

Well, we are in the top eight, but we cannot hope for other favorable outcomes and then be content with that. We desire control over our own destiny. Now that we have it, we’ll go back, recharge, and return the following day stronger.

The first matchup with Canada was tense. When both teams took advantage of solid attacking possibilities, play moved from one side of the field to the other, but both defenses stood their ground.

Ricardo Duarttee made a terrific break on his own line, and Christie Grobbelaar scored to give the Blitzboks the lead right before halftime. South Africa led 5-0 in the first half as a result.

More of the same in the second half, however Duarttee ended the game with a well-taken try off a quick-tap penalty.

The Blitzboks were stunned by their first-ever loss to Uruguay in the HSBC World Series, with the South Americans hitting the winning points with less than 20 seconds remaining.

In a game that was twice postponed due to weather, Ronald Brown scored the game’s first points to put his team up 5-0 at the break. That was also the result at the break.
